Start by thumping the strings with your thumb…you will start using your fingers…..but you have to put the pick down…good luck

I’m tempted to say that genuine bassists don’t use picks, but to each his own I guess. Remember that one of the most important bass techniques – slap and pop – can ONLY be done with fingers.
For a start, anchor your right thumb on your pickup (I put mine on the one nearer to the neck, depending on personal preference). This gives you the necessary leverage to use your fingers without tensing up your entire arm.
Remember that the bass is a rhythm instrument most of the time, so it is very technical in nature. Your practice should therefore consist of trying to get your right index and middle fingers sounding clean in a steady tempo. It might get boring, but stick with it. Hey, who knows – maybe you could do well with a pick. One of my favourite bassists – X Japan’s former bassist Taiji Sawada – played with a pick. I don’t buy that, though, and I reproduce his amazing bass solo in the hit single ‘X’ note for note with fingers.
Hope I helped, and good luck!

I rest my thumb on the pickup and just strum up with my index and middle finger.
Like a little walking finger person, haha.
