If this is a young child, find a good 3/4 size guitar. Find out if your child wants to play electric or acoustic. It doesn’t matter at all from a learning/teaching standpoint, that’s all the same, but to peak your child’s interest play to their enthusiasm. There are lots of 3/4 acoustic guitars made. I know that Fender makes a 3/4 junior stratocaster electric. Other companies must, too.

The simple answer is a guitar that fits your child. They make guitars in all sizes, 3/4, 1/2 are not too hard to find in either nylon or steel. Classical nylon guitar will be easier on your poor kids fingers.
