Being self taught is a good approach for those who are goal driven and self motivated. A teacher helps to direct learning, but that same learning can be done alone.
Also, memorizing scales does nothing for you. It creates a box, if you will, which many people have trouble getting out of. Understanding and learning the theory of scale construction is invaluable to a musician however. Friedman didn’t, which was to his disadvantage. Learning scales isn’t a necessity.

  3. IgneousWarrior Says:

He made up his own scales which turned out to have analogs in diatonic theory (such as the minor and phrygian scales). I never said that learning scales was a bad idea; far from it. I advocate learning the major scale, all seven modes, and the theory behind it. But there are other ways to play; for example, hexatonic and chromatic influenced scales which are atypical to the guitar and interesting to hear.

Little late on the uptake? If I seemed that incendiary, I apologize; that wasn’t the original intention of my post.

Chuck Schuldiner was the frontman, lead guitarist, and vocalist of the band Death, which was one of the earliest death metal bands to gain prominence. He only took one lesson in which he learned Mary Had a Little Lamb and almost quit. He stuck with the instrument and came up with his own theory of music, most of which was surprisingly similar to classical diatonic theory.

Hell why don’t we tear down the music schools? lol.

  6. Daamon77 Says:

Dude ur irritating me to death Marty. Ok, you did NOT make that up lol. Just like u said it’s harmonic minor or whatever. It’s a SCALE ok? Long established. What you did was grope in the dark until you picked it out by urself by ear. What are u DOING telling people you “don’t suggeset learning scales because it limits u”??? lol. Are u kidding me? This sticks in my craw buddy.

  7. Daamon77 Says:

    kirk hammett is a fag

  8. Daamon77 Says:

I don’t know what I’m talking about hu? lol. Ok mister guitar guru kid. Im glad u know there are seven modes. There’s alot more than that. Peraps I was a bit harsh in my comment. But the fact remains this is a sloppy way to teach based on a sloppy study approach to the guitar, or lack thereof. I’m not saying u can’t play guitar if you don’t memorize scales. Im just saying he did memorize scales. Even if he thought he made them up. He didn’t. AND I never said you couldn’t be “self taught”.

  9. Daamon77 Says:

It dosen’t matter if you teach yourself or if someone else teaches you, you’re still TAUGHT. Do you not understand that? And Chuch Who? Really? Seriously? He RECREATED western music theory by himself and I’ve never even heard of him. That’s AMAZING! You idiot lool. And even if he DID so what? He damn sure didn’t do it by MAKING UP scales. Hey if u guys want to reinvent the wheel and are some kind of mathematician Beethoven knock urself out. But it’s just bad advice plain & simple. Learn scales

  25. EthnHayabusa Says:

Which is pretty much the same thing. “A phrygian dominant” is just the name for what D harmonic minor sounds like when played over it’s V chord, which would be A7b9.The effect isn’t as dramatic when you just use a bass note, or a triad like A major, but it still works.
