Guitar lesson: Why So Much Advice On Guitar Playing?

A friend told me once, I would like to give you a piece of advice: “Don’t listen to advice!” May I give you some advice on how to relate to all learn to play guitar advising on the net.

I stand amazed when I see all fitness equipment being advertised on TV and I wonder, how is possible that ads on fitness incessantly is showed on TV and expensive equipment is sold? Is it the same people who buy these expensive things or is it new fresh buyers all the time?

Is it something wrong with the fitness training equipment? I don’t think so. Is it something wrong with all advice on guitar playing on the net or in books? I don’t think so.

See it this way; We are susceptible to advice or advertising because we are searching for something. Sometimes we are searching for something that doesn’t exist.

I think that we sometimes are searching for a quick solution to a problem. Sometimes there is a quick solution and sometimes you just have to work on a problem over an extended period of time. The guitar book you bought is probably a good book. You just have to work on the guitar lessons until you master them. One at a time with concentration.

Sometimes we are in reality seeking for the motivation to do something, like exercising our body or learning to play guitar. A new book on guitar playing or a new piece of training equipment might motivate us for a while but sooner or later our motivation will decrease if it is built upon new things only.

People are different and learn things in different ways. Some people can easily set their own goals and also work on achieving these goals over a long period of time. Others need a lot of help in order to organize themselves. Maybe they need a tutor and ordinary lessons to help them progress as guitarists.

What advice will I give you founded on the previous thoughts?

It is okay to buy training equipment if you like it. It is okay to buy a lot of learn to play guitar books and DVD’s if you feel good about it and can afford it. You might also help the market to flourish and so on.

The important question is; What do you want to accomplish? Is your main interest to test new guitar educational books and DVD’s or do you want to progress as a guitarist?

If you reflect over these questions and are honest with yourself you will find out your ultimate goal. If you want to progress as a guitarist and want to try out if you can do it all by yourself you can make this test on yourself:

Look through your guitar books or DVD’s and choose one exercise or lesson you want to work on. Give yourself a decent homework and decide on a deadline. Follow the advice in your books. Congratulations, if you can work this way! It will save you much time and money not having to pay a guitar teacher.

However, I strongly suggest that you every now and then visit a good guitar teacher to advise you! An experienced guitar teacher will spot your weaknesses in seconds and will encourage you to climb upwards as a guitar player.

As a final thought I just want to suggest that maybe the cheapest training equipment is yourself and the most overlooked fitness exercise is doing push-ups because we give up on it so easily.

If you start doing one push-up everyday for a week and the next week two you will after a year be able to do 52 push-ups everyday. Don’t believe me, but try it if you like! After all, it is only a piece of advice…

by lu_lu

Learning to Play the Electric Guitar

Do you have an electric guitar under your bed silently reminding you of a dream which is for the moment, buried? Did you fantasize about fame and female attention or was your dream about the music? Did you believe you could make a lot of progress in your musical education without much effort? Maybe you even spent a little too much money on your first electric guitar, hoping it would somehow fast track the learning process.

Well the guitar by itself isn’t really much help. The most effective input has to be from you, the aspiring guitar player.

But wait a minute! It was you who put the guitar under the bed, leaving it alone and wondering what it had done to incur your displeasure. What happened there? Why did you bury your dream? Did the fame and female attention arrive by some other route? Well obviously they weren’t what you expected or you wouldn’t be reading this. I think the issue is that you just need to look a little more closely at the process of learning the guitar.

The most obvious things to look at are firstly, did you give yourself enough time and space to practice, and were the guitar lessons you tried really suited to your needs?

If you live in a busy household you are going to have to fight for time and space. Your family or house mates may be willing to cut you some slack at first but the time will come when you pick up your guitar you will hear groaning noises from the people who a short time ago were so encouraging. You are going to need to examine your day. The hours you spend working or studying. The time you need for household chores. Are there TV programs you just can’t do without? You need to include those. If you practice in the living room you need to do it when other people aren’t using the area. You get the idea. If you end up with much less time to devote to guitar lessons than you thought you had, don’t give up. Just use the time you have available. As your guitar playing progresses you will begin to make more time for yourself.

So what kind of guitar lessons do you feel you could derive the most benefit from? The fact is learning to play the guitar will flow much more smoothly if you feel comfortable and receptive. So give some consideration to what works best for you.

So let’s look at the simplest solution – buy a guitar lesson book. Too simple? It might be all you need. Some people can’t do without the input of a face to face teacher or the experience of seeing their guitar lessons on video, but there are many people who do quite well with printed instructions and music.

If you need a more intense experience, but you have a live guitar teacher near where you live then give online electric guitar lessons a shot. With online lessons, you just sit in your room and absorb the teacher’s instructions, and then do your practice. No time wasted travelling to your teacher, and no putting up with a teacher you do not care for!

Some people do better without a teacher standing over them, encouraging them to play it until they get it right. Online electric guitar lessons are more student-friendly in this respect. You can approach any obstacles in your own individual way, in your own sweet time.

One of the most outstanding advantages of online electric guitar lessons compared to tuition with a live teacher is the expense. You can get even the very best lessons on the internet for a fraction of what you would pay your local guitar teacher!

You can also buy your guitar lessons in video format. Video lessons are available for students of all genres of guitar music whether they be beginners or advanced students. With videos you can review your lessons as many times as you want, and even if you lose your enthusiasm for learning the guitar, your video lessons will be waiting for you when your muse returns.

Plinth Telephone System on the Fourth Plinth (One and Other) performance art in Trafalgar Square, London.

This plinther ran lengths of string with polystyrene cups at each end from the plinth to the audience in the square.

Obviously doesn’t know much about the science of sound. You need two tin cans tied to a length of string and no obstruction bewteen them. The string was wound around the pole and through the net. Schoolkid error. Then the string became a trip hazard, so a work experience trainee from the One and Other team was delegated to gather it.

Then she played guitar which we couldn’t hear.

Question by Tommy J Klyde: How much should I pay for a bass guitar?
I want to get into playing the bass, I’ve never felt this way about an instrument. I was wondering what price range should I be expecting. I want to try to convince my father to spot me some of the cash, so it can’t be too expensive. I just need a half decent bass guitar, nothing flashy, something I can learn on.

Answer by Left-T
Hi Tom

I wold go on ebay and buy a second hand. At least, you will get oyur money’s worth and a decent bass for lessthan half the price of a new one.

Here is a link on ebay for bass Guitars at around $ 100

How To Play Bass Pedals (One Octave)

If you play the organ then you are probably familiar with bass pedals. They are also available as separate units and are known as MIDI bass pedals and you can use them with any keyboard that has MIDI ports. Just connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI out on the keyboard to the MIDI in on the pedal board and you can play any of your keyboard sounds from the pedal board.

Playing the pedals can be a bit daunting at first. I remember when I first attempted to play the pedals when I started to play the organ. I had learned to play the piano for fifteen years before I started on organ so music ability wasn’t the problem, but I could not get the hang of these pedals. Part of the problem is playing style; with a piano, you have a moving right hand and left hand, so to suddenly expect your left foot to start playing a pedal keyboard is asking a lot.

Ideally, you want your bass foot to be an extension of your left hand. So when you play a chord with your left hand, you play the root of that chord on the bass pedal. For example, play a C chord with your left hand and play a C bass pedal with your left foot. Of course, this is the simplest method of playing the bass pedals but a necessary start. You will want to graduate towards playing alternating bass and walking bass.

So here are five simple exercises to help you play the bass pedals.

1. Play a C scale with your left foot. Starting with the bottom C pedal, play to the top C and down again. Make sure to start slowly. These exercises are teaching you distances between pedals. It’s more important to be slow and accurate to start with. Speed will come later.

2. Play this sequence of notes on the pedal board. Bottom C, G, top C, G, bottom C repeat a minimum of ten times.

3. Play this sequence of notes C, E, D, F, E, G, F, A, G, B, A, B, C repeat as above.

4. Play a chromatic scale starting with C, up and down the pedal board. (If you know it, play a section of flight of the bumblebee with your left foot)

5. Finally play a chromatic scale with chords and bass pedals, up and down.

With all the above exercises, you can look at the pedals your are playing when you first attempt the exercises. After a few weeks practice, you should be able to play the pedal board without looking at all.

As I said above, I had problems with bass pedals when I changed from piano to organ. After using the above exercises, I was able to play bass pedals very naturally and without thinking about what pedal comes next. It’s a bit like learning to drive. Once you’re used to your cars pedals and gear stick you don’t think about it, you just drive.
