You can no longer see the original post that I was replying too, so you’re seeing it out of context. That dude said some ridiculous things and I was replying to him.
Of course learning music theory is a good thing. Duh.
If you want to be the best well rounded musician possible, learn everything you can about guitar. Reading music, theory, etc… is all good.
But don’t think that you “can’t play” without knowing that stuff. That’s a different thing.
you are not entirely right. Of course you can learn how to play on your own and improve with experience. But most guitar players who don’t study end up playing only pentatonic scales and all their compositions sound the same. you mentioned Chuck Berry and he’s one of them. Music can be much more than that. if you study you can really be able to express yourself musically. Then of course there are exceptions. But in general you are a much better player if you study.
Two things…less talk pls and more compression on the guitar. If you notice, on the higher notes the sound was more in the background of the mix but when playing the lower section of the guitar, the bass began to rise up out of the mix. Very undesirable lil monkey …that bass feedback! Otherwise it was informative, to say the very least, and good marketing by connecting the lesson back to your site.
Wow, that’s a ridiculous statement. Do you think players like Chuck Berry has an in depth knowledge of music theory or can “sight read” music notation? I doubt it. Does that mean he will never be able to play an instrument? Of course not.
Knowledge of music theory and ability to “sight read” music notation isn’t related to being “able to play” an instrument. It does however relate to KNOWING what you’re doing.
First answer is Yes, that Ionian could be considered = to “major scale”.
Second: If someone is playing with a special tuning, perhaps in the key of G (Blues with a slide), it doesn’t matter to you, playing along with a different guitar, with a standard tuning. As long as the notes you choose on your instrument match the chords they are playing you are good. Now if you plan to play single note solos with an open tuning, yes – you will need to rediscover where the notes are located.
Is Ionian just a fancy word for “Major”? in every single key? if so is there any point in an Ionian?
You look like you know your stuff so can I ask ya a quick question…… If you have tuned your guitar to something other than standard, then how the **** can people solo over a chord? unless you relearn ALL of your scales again to fit the tuning? I don’t get that :-S even something as simple as Drop D would seriously **** me up big time.
This is a I – vi – ii – V progression in the key of D. Ionian or Major Pentatonic is the easiest modes to play with – but he is attempting to expand the player to think in Chord-Scales rather than in modes.
i think it would really be nice if you could do some of your stuff for GUITAR PRO…………GUITAR PRO is the best guitar music learning program ever……be nice to see some of your lessons transcribed to GP…..ty……and your awsome
