I’m a beginning bass guitar student. My goal is ultimately to use the bass guitar as a lead or solo instrument. I only found two books that give the scores for popular songs, made just for the bass guitar. I’m tired of playing basslines only, I want to play the melody of the song using the bass. The only books that I found with the song melodies are of Christmas Carols. I love those books, but want to find more. Does anyone know of any more books like these?

With the Internet you will find the goal to learn bass guitar much easier, as there are so many new methods offered by the Internet. There are videos for instance which will show you firsthand how to learn bass guitar, and many of these you can even watch for free and do not have to pay for so you can learn bass guitar free.

Regardless of which method you choose to use to learn bass guitar, here are a few tips that you will find very helpful. For one, before you even try to hold the instrument at all, you are going to need to understand how you are supposed to hold your arms and hands. You need to hold your right arm straight out so that it is parallel to the ground, and release all of the muscles in your hand. Take a look at your hand and notice the positions that your fingers are in.

This is basically the way that you are going to need to hold your fingers when you are holding the guitar. Now you want to bring your hand to a flat, hard surface, making sure that you keep your forearm parallel to the ground the entire time. Place your index and middle fingers on the flat, hard surface so that only the fingertips of your index and middle fingers are on the tabletop and both fingertips are touching each other.

Now you can move on and actually start holding the guitar. You will want to place your right thumb on the E string of your bass guitar to learn bass guitar, and make sure that it is midway between the end of the fingerboard and the pickups.

These are just the most basic tips to help get you started, and if you want to become a really advanced bass guitar player, you will need to practice, practice, practice. The more often you play, the more skills you will learn and the better bass player you will become. Especially if you are interested in joining a band or otherwise playing bass professionally for instance, you will need to be practicing all the time.

Let’s face it: most people don’t even know what a bass is. While the venerable six string guitar is admired and respected by millions, the bass guitar is somewhat less glamorous. After all, you’re not exactly standing out in the front, laying down hot licks and screaming solos. You’re not even pounding away by playing chords. You’re sitting in that sonic space below, forming the bridge between the drummer and the rest of the instrumentation.

Bassists are rarely the most popular members in their band. Overlooked by fans and critics alike, you might wonder why you should bother playing this seemingly unpopular instrument. After all, wasn’t the whole point of starting rock band to get more girls? Why play bass when you can get more attention elsewhere?

The truth is, if you’re really doing this for attention, don’t play bass. Everything you’ve heard is absolutely right. With few exceptions, bass players do not get the attention. However, they do get to have tons of fun.

Let me explain. I said earlier that the bass forms the bridge between the rhythm sections (usually the drums) and the rest of the music. As a result, you’re playing an absolutely critical role in a band. You form the beat, the pulse, the groove of the song. Without you, the band wouldn’t sound nearly as good. This is an awesome responsibility, and the satisfaction you can get from providing this hard to describe until you’ve experienced it.

As the “god of the groove”, you’ll be surprised at how much your playing manipulates the audience. Your bass lines will be what makes people move. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as looking at and seeing an entire crowd dancing and moving to the groove that you’re laying down. No guitarist ever had it this good.

On the more practical side, bassists are always in demand, assuming you’re skilled enough to lay down a rock solid groove. Since the more glamorous guitar draws more players, the supply of skilled bass players is much lower. This makes it easier to find a band that will be in need of your services. This is a nice perk, since you’ll almost always be able to find work if you’re good.

So, I hope this helps you see why playing the bass guitar can be such a rewarding experience. It doesn’t put you front stage and center, but once you see that crowd moving to your groove, you’ll realize that being in the spotlight is somewhat overrated.
