An electric guitar has open strings of EADGBE, and is designed for playing chords and/or melody lines.
An electric bass typically has 4 strings, with the same notes as the guitar EADG, but an octave lower. Bass is used for single note lines, rarely used for chords, and bass usually works more with the drummer as rhythm accompaniment for the guitarist.
They are in the same category, because they are both technically “guitars.”

Ok, well there are multiple differences. First off, an electric guitar has six strings (basically) and a bass has 4 unless more are added, but that’s for advance players. The bass guitar has a longer neck where as the guitar is short. The bass guitar strings are thicker and the notes are lower, you write the notes in the bass clef. On the guitar the notes are higher and notes are mainly written on the G clef (there are some that go below that onto the bass clef, but other then that you’d have to use a drop tuning like drop D or drop C.) The bass guitar is more of a rhythm giver where as the regular guitar is more of a lead instrument. Plus, the strings on a bass guitar are different than the strings on an electric guitar as far as notes are concerned. I hope that helps you out, I have this question once too!!!

An electric guitar is just a guitar, 6 strings. A bass only has 4 strings, some have 5. The bass has a deeper sound to it. Most songs you listen to you hear more of the guitar even though the bass is just as important to a band the guitar is more spot-lighted.
