Blues Guitar Scale #1: The Minor Pentatonic Scale

The minor pentatonic scale is a five note scale that has the following formula:

1 b3 4 5 b7

This formula tells us what we need to change in the major scale in order to create this scale. Let’s work out the notes of A minor pentatonic scale to make things clearer…

Step 1:

Write down the notes of the A major scale. This gives us the following notes…

Step 2:

Remove the second and sixth notes from the A major scale. This is because the formula of the minor pentatonic scale doesn’t contain a 2 or a 6. So this would give us…

Obviously, this theory is a waste of time unless you APPLY it. You must learn to use it in real-life playing situations. Once you learn to use it, you will amazed at how useful it is!

In this bass guitar lesson you will learn to play a melody with the help of bass tablature. To play melodies is a great way to practice finger dexterity and you can actually play them to your friends!

First we will take a look at a bass tablature staff:

These four lines represent the strings on your bass guitar. We will assume that you have four strings on your bass. The top line represents the first string on your guitar, the string with the highest pitch or the G-string.

On these lines you will find numbers telling you to press down your fingers on the frets. Here is an example:

The number 3 tells you to press down the third fret on the third string and play the note. The number 0 tells you to play the open second string, that is, without pressing down a fret.

In this bass guitar lesson you will play the melody in the second position. That means that you play all the notes on the second fret with your index finger, the notes on the third fret with your middle finger and so on.

I will write down the lyrics to the song Amazing Grace one line at a time. Below every line I will give you the corresponding melody written with tablature notation as previously explained. Let us start with the first line:

Guitar tab is the simplest way to write guitar music but if you do it using a text editor it can be time consuming typing out all those lines and getting the numbers in the right place.

If you want to write your own tab for guitar, software is available – free and for a price – that edits and plays guitar tab for you. Probably the best free option is TuxGuitar. The name refers to the penguin logo associated with the Linux operating system. TuxGuitar was  developed for the Linux platform but will work on Windows as well.

With TuxGuitar you can write your own tab or music notation for guitar, with all the bells and whistles needed to write a conventional music score. This program also imports and exports the file format used in the GuitarPro tab editor. Just do a Google search for TuxGuitar.

There is an online guitar tab generator that writes the tab for you as you click your mouse on a picture of the guitar fretboard. The tab generator at gootar.com lets you click on a place on the guitar fretboard and you see the note on the tab in real time. You will also hear the sound if you have the correct version of Flash Player.

There is also a program called Easy Tab Maker Pro 4.31 which produces guitar tabs as you play. You plug your guitar into your computer and play. While you are playing, the program analyzes the sound to convert into tab form the notes you were playing and where your fingers were placed.
